Why Tartu?

University of Tartu was founded in 1632 which means that UT is one of the oldest universities in Northern and Eastern Europe. Early records about Georgian students studying in Tartu go back to the beginning of XX century.
The university includes 9 faculties and 4 colleges. Currently, there are more than 18 000 students studying at UT, including more than 700 international students. The university has 66 partner universities in 24 countries including Georgia. The map of partner schools can be viewed here. Many Georgian students studying at the UT have used an opportunity to visit another country for an exchange semester. These short-term studies are based on the bilateral partnership agreements of UT with different schools around the world and international exchange programmes (e.g. Erasmus) . Please, see more about how to become an exchange student of UT in another country here

Location

UT is located in Tartu, the second biggest town in Estonia, which is a member state of EU, Schengen Treaty and Eurozone. Tartu has a population of 100 000, and a fifth of its residents are students. When coupled together with high school students and children, at least 30% of the town’s population is comprised of young people. Tartu is located in Southern Estonia: it takes 2.5 hours by bus to get to the capital Tallinn and 45 minutes to fly to the capital of Finland, Helsinki.

These activities include international food fests, sledging, sauna days, guest lectures etc. The highlights of each semester are the Spring and Autumn Student Days, 2 weeks filled with dozens of entertaining and educating events only for students. UT has numerous students clubs and associations, ranging from professional organizations to informal groups based on common hobbies. International students are actively involved in the social and entertaining events organized by Erasmus Student Network: movie nights, boat trips, national evenings, concerts, trips around Estonia, sports events, etc. Students are encouraged to create football, basketball or volleyball teams and participate in the championships. Others find an opportunity to form music bands and perform at youth concerts.
